caravaggio_ritratto.jpg">Michelangelo Merisi was called Caravaggio after his birthplace in the province of Bergamo where he spent his childhood.

Between 1584 and 1588 he was an apprentice in the Milan workshop of the painter Simone Peterzano who also came from Bergamo. From the sixteenth century Lombard painters he acquired his bent for naturalism and attention to detail.
